Sources disagree on the date of that night. Wikipedia's text says 15 October 1957, while its infobox says 16 October. A write-up of the case says the day is either 15 October or 16 October 1957 in most sources, and that a few early documents show a December date, which it treats as an artefact of the earliest English accounts.

Antônio Villas-Boas was then a farmer of 23 who ploughed by night to dodge the daytime heat. In his story, near São Francisco de Sales, he spotted what he called a red star in the night sky. It drew nearer and grew into a roughly round or egg-shaped craft, with a red light in front and a spinning dome on top. It came down into the field on three extended legs.

The next morning, an account says, there were heel-less footprints in the ploughed soil, three deep marks from the legs, and a pair of slight sores on his chin, from which blood was said to be drawn. Dr. Fontes passed a thorough report to a research group dealing with aerial phenomena, whose staff judged it too fantastical to publish, though the story still went round among the experts. All of this is Villas-Boas's account, and some skeptics treat it as a hoax.

From the primary source
"At the time of his alleged abduction, Antônio Vilas-Boas was a 23-year-old Brazilian farmer who was working at night to avoid the hot temperatures of the day.[6] On 15 October 1957, he was ploughing fields near São Francisco de Sales when he saw what he described as a "red star" in the night sky. According to his story, this "star" approached his position, growing in size until it became recognizable as a roughly circular or egg-shaped aerial craft, with a red light at its front and a rotating cupola on top. The craft began descending to land in the field, extending three "legs" as it did so."
