The Municipality of the District of Barrington says witnesses first believed they had seen a plane go down and reported it to the RCMP detachment at Barrington Passage. Ron Pound, an RCMP constable, had already seen the lights while driving on Highway 3 toward Shag Harbour. He believed they were four lights on a single craft about 60 feet long.

CBC News tells how one witness, Wickens, went to a phone booth to call the RCMP. He was met with doubt and asked if he had been drinking. Soon after he hung up, the payphone began to ring.

According to Wikipedia, RCC Halifax found by the next morning that no aircraft was missing. The captain of a Canadian Coast Guard cutter still on the search was told by radio that every commercial, private and military aircraft on the eastern seaboard, across the Atlantic provinces and New England, was accounted for.

Brian Dunning of Skeptoid (2017) says the case went astray in 1993, when UFOlogist Chris Styles claimed he had seen a UFO as a boy during a related event a few weeks after Shag Harbour.
