The Sallie House
A house in Atchison, Kansas, where tenants Tony and Debra Pickman reported strange events after moving in during 1993. A local story links it to a 6-year-old girl called Sallie.
KANSAS! Magazine, published by the state's tourism office, says the house went up between 1867 and 1871; Wikipedia gives only a looser date, the middle of that century. The magazine says Dr. Charles C. Finney lived there and is thought to have seen patients in the front rooms downstairs toward the end of that century. It tells a story of a mother bringing in her daughter Sallie, aged 6, to the doctor one night with stomach pain, and the doctor fearing her appendix would soon burst. Wikipedia says a girl who died there during an operation for appendicitis is said to haunt the house.
Jill Robbins, writing for Kansas Tourism, dates the activity that made the house known to 1993, the year Debra Pickman and her husband Tony rented it. The couple were expecting their first child. Robbins writes that they soon began to notice odd, and at times threatening, events in the house.
Wikipedia says the story reached a national audience after several paranormal television shows featured the house.
"The Sallie House is located in Atchison, Kansas. Built in the mid-1800s,[1] it is said to be haunted by the ghost of a young girl who died in the house while undergoing surgery for appendicitis. The story gained national attention after it was featured on several paranormal television shows."
