Claimed sighting
The Nash-Fortenberry sighting
Two Pan American pilots reported eight objects flying in formation over Chesapeake Bay, Virginia, on the night of 14 July 1952.
William Nash and William Fortenberry, both commercial pilots, said they saw eight unidentified flying objects in a tight echelon formation over Chesapeake Bay in Virginia. The date was 14 July 1952.
The pilots told their own story in True magazine in 1952. They wrote that on the night of 14 July they were on a ferry flight in a Pan American DC-4 on the New York to Miami run. Captain Fred Koepke was the third crew member, and ten passengers, company staff and their families, were aboard. They described a clear night with unlimited visibility, and only thin cirrus cloud at 20,000 feet.
