The Moffitt family haunting

A haunting the Moffitt family says they lived with from 1987 to 1992, told publicly by Jessica Moffitt in a 2022 essay and since bought for adaptation by Blumhouse.

Jessica Moffitt told the story in an October 2022 essay for HuffPost Personal, mostly passing on her mother's account. Her mother said an unknown presence took hold of the house in 1987, three years ahead of Jessica's birth, and announced itself with a two-word message on the bathroom mirror saying there was no way out. Variety says the presence became known as Mr. Entity.

According to her mother, a paranormal researcher lived with the family to study the presence. He told her he thought it could transform his life and pleaded with it to leave with him. The family says that when he moved out in 1992 the activity stopped at once, and that its last written message was a farewell to the family. Variety reports that the Moffitts kept the events secret from everyone but paranormal experts.

The essay spread widely. In March 2023 Variety reported that Blumhouse had bought the rights to the story of Deborah and Jessica Moffitt, and Bloody Disgusting said the deal also covered Jessica's unpublished manuscript, Mr. Entity: The Moffitt Family Haunting, based on Deborah's first-hand accounts, together with the family archive. Every source here rests on the family's own telling, and none reports an independent investigation.
