The Mande Burung
A large, hairy, ape-like creature said to live in the Garo Hills of Meghalaya. A tourism society was looking into new reports in 2007.
Wikipedia calls the Mande Burung an alleged ape-like creature of Indian folklore, said to live in the subtropical forests of the remote Garo Hills in Meghalaya, in north-east India. The name means jungle man, according to Mongabay.
Mongabay's 2007 report places it among the world's reports of Bigfoot, a creature most scientists dismiss because an animal like that could hardly avoid detection. It also notes that such sightings often turn up when an area wants to promote tourism, and says the Achik Tourism Society was looking into the newest reports from India.
Down To Earth names Dipu Marak, who makes documentaries in Tura, in the Garo Hills, and has spent much of his life trying to prove the Mande Burung exists.
"In Indian folklore, the Mande Burung is an alleged ape-like creature said to inhabit the Meghalaya subtropical forests in the remote Garo Hills of the Northeast India."
