Wikipedia dates the start to before dawn on 20 September 1995, when someone worshipping at a temple in the south of New Delhi offered milk to a statue of Ganesha. A spoonful held to the trunk appeared to vanish, as if the statue had taken it. News spread fast. Statues of the whole Hindu pantheon, it was said by mid-morning, were doing likewise in temples across India.

Hinduism Today published a correspondent's account from the Ganesha temple in Edmonton, Canada. The writer describes the milk running from the spoon up the stone trunk's surface, usually within about 20 seconds, spoonful after spoonful, from a Friday evening puja until late on a Sunday. At two teaspoons a minute over 51.5 hours, the writer estimated about 7.7 US gallons were taken. Little milk showed around the statue, and the garments were wet only on the trunk side, which could not account for the volume. The writer concluded that those present had seen something they could not explain logically.

From the primary source
"Before dawn on 20 September 1995, a worshipper at a temple in southern New Delhi made an offering of milk to a statue of Ganesha. When a spoonful of milk from the bowl was held up to the trunk of the statue, the liquid appeared to disappear, apparently taken in by the statue. Word of the event spread quickly, and by mid-morning it was claimed that statues of the entire Hindu pantheon in temples all over India were doing likewise.[2]"
