Hill House
The fictional house in Shirley Jackson's 1959 novel The Haunting of Hill House, later the basis of a 2018 Netflix series.
Hill House is fiction. It is the setting of Shirley Jackson's novel The Haunting of Hill House, published in 1959 and a fiction finalist at the 1960 National Book Awards, according to the National Book Foundation. The novel follows four people who come to stay: the occult scholar Dr. Montague, who wants proof of a haunting; Theodora, his assistant; Eleanor, a lonely, fragile young woman with past experience of poltergeists; and Luke, who is due to inherit the house.
Wikipedia says Jackson chose to try a ghost story once she had read about some psychic researchers of the 19th century and their study of a house thought to be haunted. Mental Floss adds that the researchers rented the house and wrote up what happened there for a treatise for the Society for Psychic Research. What Jackson found in their reports, she wrote, was a story about the people: earnest, determined and, in her view, misguided.
In 2018 Netflix released a series, The Haunting of Hill House. The Hollywood Reporter said Mike Flanagan had adapted the novel very loosely, and praised the series as among the most effective and sustained attempts at the genre on television.
"Jackson had decided to write "a ghost story" after reading about a group of nineteenth century "psychic researchers" who studied a supposedly haunted house. What she discovered in their "dry reports", she writes, "was not the story of a haunted house, it was the story of several earnest, I believe misguided, certainly determined people, with their differing motivations and backgrounds.""
