George Gorman, aged 25, had flown fighters before and held a commission as second lieutenant in the Air National Guard of North Dakota. On 1 October 1948 he was at the controls of a single-seat Mustang on a cross-country flight with other Guard pilots. Wikipedia gives the time his flight reached Fargo as about 8:30 pm. Discovery UK calls his aircraft an F-51 Mustang, while History.com and Wikipedia call it a P-51.

SOFREP describes how the other pilots landed at Hector Airport while Gorman stayed up for more night flying, circling a well-lit stadium before heading back. Discovery UK says Gorman said a bright white light outflew him during a chase of about 27 minutes.
