Dear David
A 2017 ghost story that Adam Ellis, then at BuzzFeed, told on Twitter as a true account of a dead child haunting his apartment. It went viral and became a 2023 film.
Adam Ellis worked at BuzzFeed from 2013 to 2018, according to Wikipedia. In August 2017 he began posting on Twitter about what he said was a dead child's ghost in his apartment, and later rewrote the posts as a running BuzzFeed article. There he said he feared for his safety and was writing everything down in case he disappeared. He said he had added some pictures for effect, and that the events were all true.
Deadline reports that the story went viral and that Ellis passed a million Twitter followers as it grew between 7 August and 12 December 2017. In 2018 Ellis told TheWrap he had no interest in persuading anyone that ghosts exist and only wanted to tell his story. He added that if he had made it up, he would have posted updates more often than every few weeks.
Lionsgate released the film Dear David on 13 October 2023, and Wikipedia records that critics panned it. In an October 2024 Twitter post Ellis said he was paid nothing for the film, because he wrote the story while on BuzzFeed's staff, which Wikipedia notes its contracts allowed.
"Adam worked at Buzzfeed from September 2013 until 2018, where he created or co-wrote 290 articles.[4] His viral ghost story, "My Apartment Is Being Haunted By The Ghost Of A Dead Child And I'm Not Sure What To Do", was turned into a full-length film by Lionsgate in 2023. The film, Dear David, was released to poor reviews. On a Twitter post in October 2024, Adam revealed that he received no compensation from the film release since he had been a Buzzfeed employee when he wrote the story, which was technically legal due to BuzzFeed's contracts.[5]"
