Three witnesses reported that the medium Daniel Dunglas Home floated out of one window and into another above a street on 16 December 1868. Later writers said he crossed a ledge between balconies.

On 16 December 1868, according to Lord Adare, Lord Lindsay and Captain Wynne, the medium Daniel Dunglas Home went into a trance at Ashley House. They reported that he floated out through the bedroom window, then back in at the sitting-room window, drifting seventy feet over the street below. Lewis Spence's Encyclopaedia of Occultism, quoted by Strange History, repeats this and says the three men left a very minute account. Spence also says Home levitated on many occasions in 1868 in front of those three and a fourth man, Mr Smith Barry.

Lord Adare described Home swinging out of a window and back in while lying flat. Writer John Sladek pointed out that the three witnesses gave contradictory details of the levitation, and even contradicted themselves on specific points.

Spiritualists said Home levitated outside a window, and skeptics disputed it. Researchers Joseph McCabe and Trevor H. Hall concluded he had simply walked along a ledge joining a pair of iron balconies.

"Lord Adare stated that Home "swung out and in" of a window in a horizontal position.[64] However, John Sladek has pointed out that all three witnesses gave contradictory information about the levitation, even contradicting themselves about specific details:"
