Bukit Timah Monkey Man
An ape-like creature said to live in the forest of Bukit Timah, Singapore. Reported sightings reach back to the 1800s, and Wikipedia calls its existence disputed.
Wikipedia describes the Bukit Timah Monkey Man, often shortened to BTM or BTMM, as a cryptid of Singapore, mostly placed in the wooded Bukit Timah area. Accounts cast it as a hominid or primate of the forest, and some say it cannot die. Wikipedia adds that nobody knows what it is, that written records of it are few and scattered, and that most people treat it as local folklore.
Mothership (2018) traces the first account to 1805, when a Malay elder is said to have spotted an ape-like creature on two legs around Bukit Timah. Mothership (2020) says sightings date back to World War II, from 1942 to 1945. CNA (2018) calls it a lasting though little-known urban legend, with reported sightings from the 1800s up to the mid-2000s.
Nine Travel (2017) says people disagree about what the creature is. Some take it for a restless soul doomed to wander forever. Others think it is a tale told to keep children out of the forest.
"The Bukit Timah Monkey Man, commonly abbreviated[citation needed] as BTM or BTMM, is a cryptid said to inhabit Singapore,[1] chiefly in the forested Bukit Timah region. The creature is often cited as a forest-dwelling hominid or primate, and is also accounted for as being immortal;[citation needed] however, its exact identity remains unknown, and its existence disputed. Documentation of the BTM is sparse and scattered; the creature is largely considered a product of local folklore."
